HEAD INJURIES CAUSED BY CAR CRASHES

Head injuries are one of the most common injuries resulting from a car crash. Traumatic brain injuries can have long-lasting consequences, even if the injury doesn’t appear to be severe at the time of the accident.

Head Injuries are classified into two types:

1. Open head
2. Closed head

Open head injuries happen when the scalp and skull have been visibly affected by accident. These may be superficial wounds, or they may be deeper wounds where the skull has been penetrated. A deep head wound can be severe and usually requires emergency medical attention.

Closed head injuries take place when the brain has been injured inside the skull, without visible wounds. A concussion, for example, is a very common closed head injury. More severe types of brain injuries including bleeding on the brain and severe brain damage can occur due to the force of an accident.

It is challenging to diagnose a closed head injury. Usually, they will present mild to moderate symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and nausea. An individual who has experienced a head injury may not know they have been injured, and if the damage remains undiagnosed and untreated, it may continue to progress until symptoms become more severe and potentially even life-threatening.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) can be caused by a repeated or particularly forceful head trauma. It is a form of dementia that can lead to a whole host of complications including impaired judgment, poor impulse control, addiction and severe depression. The condition occurs when trauma causes brain tissue to deteriorate and accumulate abnormal amounts of a protein known as “tau.” CTE is especially troubling because it can only be definitively diagnosed during an autopsy.
